The Ultimate Troubleshooter — Help

WMI not loaded

WMI  stands for Microsoft's Windows Management Instrumentation.  It is a subsystem of Windows which enables programs like TUT to retrieve detailed information about the hardware and software make-up of your PC.  TUT uses WMI on the  System Info  tab to retrieve full information about your PC.  If for some reason TUT is unable to talk to the WMI subsystem on your PC, it will display the  WMI not loaded  error message and will be restricted to displaying only  reduced information  on its  System Info  tab.

This is the  only effect  of the  "WMI not loaded"  error message – reduced information on the "System Info" tab.

WMI comes as part of Windows in Windows ME/2000/XP/2003.  It is not part of Windows 95/98 but your PC may have picked it up automatically if you have been keeping up with Windows Updates and if you also have at least Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2 installed.

If you find that for some reason TUT is displaying  WMI not loaded  at the bottom of the screen, then try the following steps :
  • The first thing to do is to run the  Tools \ Re-enable WMI Support  menu option in TUT (from version 4.42 onward).  Then close TUT, and re-open TUT.  This will solve the problem in most cases.

  • If you find that on re-opening TUT, TUT freezes and you have to do an "End Task" on it, then go this page, http://www.answersthatwork.com/TUT_pages/TUT_help_page.htm, and see if installing any of the suggested files helps.

  • If none of the above work, try the following which is an adaptation
    of  this Microsoft solution :

—  Start  TUT.

—  Go to the  Services  tab.

—  Look for this service :

—  Right-click on it and choose  Stop.

—  Using  Windows Explorer  or  "My Computer"  navigate to the
—  C:\Windows\System32\Wbem folder.

—  Delete the  REPOSITORY  subfolder that you will find in there.

—  Switch back to TUT.

—  Restart the WMI service which you stopped above by
—  right clicking on it and choosing  Start.

—  Close TUT.

—  After one minute restart your PC and test.

If none of the above works, and you have an  updated version of Windows 2000/XP,  ie. Windows 2000 SP4 or later, or Windows XP SP1 or later, contact us at :

If none of the above works and you have  Windows 95/98/ME  then there is not much more than can be done.  It is our experience that in Windows 95/98/ME WMI is not always stable and that it will suddenly one day refuse to work thoroughly, whether with TUT or with other programs.  Once this happens, our experience is that it is pure luck if we manage to get WMI to work thoroughly thereafter.  Amongst the multitude of PCs in our offices we have a few Windows 98SE and Windows ME PCs where WMI will simply not load and as a result TUT cannot display the full hardware information about those PCs, and, just like you, one day it is working and the next day, after installing a well trusted program or, worse, after doing a Windows Update (!!),  WMI suddenly no longer works properly.

So, to reiterate, it is unfortunately something that does happen on Windows 95/98/ME and, from our experience, now that you have tried all the steps that we could think of, we do not believe it will ever work properly with TUT on your PC again.

This is not a problem with TUT, it is a problem with WMI !

All this actually means is that you will not have full and thorough hardware information on the  System Info  tab of TUT.
