Very useful utility for managing Microsoft's ActiveSync.  As many users will have found, Microsoft's ActiveSync has a tendency to sometimes use excessive CPU resources when not in use, or will sometimes interfere with your network connections or serial or USB ports.  Problem :  ActiveSync is difficult to unload completely so you can get back your CPU resources, or the use of your USB or serial port.  ActiveSyncToggle eliminates this problem by enabling you to start or fully unload ActiveSyncToggle at will.  Free.

For Windows 98/NT4/ME/2000/XP.  You should run either this program or Spybot Search & Destroy further down on this page.  Many software packages come with embedded third party software which sends information about your Internet behaviour from your PC to specific companies!!  This is called spyware.  In other cases the embedded software pulls advertisements from a specific ad server whenever you are connected to the Internet and displays them to you.  This is called adware and has the highest annoyance level possible !  Software manufacturers use adware so they can let you use their software free of charge while they get their revenue from advertisers.  Unfortunately, even when you de-install the original "carrier" software, the spyware or adware often still remains on your PC, sending information out every time you connect to the Internet.  The potential for this type of software is enormous as it can easily be turned into something that sends information that is stored on your PC!!  The problem is such that antivirus manufacturers are starting to produce commercial products to address it.  And it gets worse, time and time again this type of software is found to be the cause of Internet browser crashes, PC freezes, illegal operations, etc...  Run either Ad-Aware SE or SpyBot Search & Destroy (use one or the other, not both) to see if your PC has such software running, and then rid yourself of it!  Note :  if you have Ad-Aware 5.x or 6.x, fully uninstall it before installing Ad-Aware SE.

A handy little freeby from AMD which tells you what your CPU is and what facilities it supports.  If all you want to know is what CPU you are running, and what it supports, then this is for you.  For a more extensive inventory of your PC, however, download The Ultimate Troubleshooter.

The ultimate archive files search tool. How many hours have you spent looking for a particular file inside many ZIP files or CAB Windows installation files and wished there was an easier way than opening one archive file at a time.  Well, this is it.  Enter the filename that you are looking for, choose the folder you want to search through and you will have the results in seconds.  Archive Peek will search through ACE, ARC, ARJ, CAB, GRP, HYP, LZH, PAK, RAR, SQZ, TAR, WAD, ZIP, and ZOO archive files.  A fantastic time saver. It's only downside is that it cannot search zipped EXEs.  Free.

Every programmer or systems person has needed an ASCII table at some stage or other – yet, ASCII tables, which should be part of all operating systems, are so difficult to get hold of.  This brilliant tool from Indonesia fills this gap and enables you to view ASCII codes on-screen or print a comprehensive ASCII table.  Free.

Isn't it frustrating how Microsoft did not provide a tool for dealing properly with File Associations in Windows 95/98 ?  Well, here is a tool which will enable you to change/repair file associations if you are running Windows 95/98.  Do not use under Windows NT4/ME/2000/XP (Win ME/2000/XP have a proper file association tool anyway).  $12 after 10 uses.  The Visual Basic runtime needs to be present on your PC for this program to install and run –  click here  for the Visual Basic 4 runtime installation file.

Bootlog Analyzer 1.23    278K
Cannot start Windows 95/98.  It keeps hanging while loading, yet it will load into Safe Mode without problem.  It could be buggy drivers which fail to load, or faulty hardware which causes a particular driver to fail.  Whatever it is, you have no way of knowing for certain.  This is where Bootlog Analyzer could be your saviour.  Press and hold F8 when you start your PC and choose the option that creates the BOOTLOG.TXT file.  Then, after your PC has hung yet again, reboot into Safe Mode and use Bootlog Analyzer to analyze your log file so that you can see what exactly is happening when Windows is trying to boot into Normal Mode.  Bootlog Analyzer can sort load events in many different ways, by the time of the event, by loading duration, by event type, by failed events, or by events that experienced delays.  A very useful troubleshooting tool.  Free.

The ultimate conversion calculator from Joshua Madison.  Think of any type of measurement you wish to convert (feet, centimetres, litres, Celcius, seconds, sqft, degrees, etc...), it will do it.  And you can even program it to do conversions between changeable values, such as currency conversions.  A must for anyone who regularly deals with different countries' measurements.  Free.

Another gem from Glenn Alcott who brought you the indispensable Directory Printer.  All Systems Consultants, Software Developers, and IT specialists should have this tool alongside Directory Printer.  In a nutshell this program allows you to compare two folders and pick out the differences (files missing from one folder, or files with the same name but with a different date, size, or time).  You can then synchronize the two directories, in either direction, rename files, copy files from one directory to the other, check file version information, print listings of directories or export to a CSV file, and you can even compare text files visually.  Top stuff.  This is a 15-day evaluation.  Price :  $29.  All versions of Windows.

One of the most useful little programs for Windows 95/98/NT/ME/2000/XP/2003. This program fills the biggest void in Windows 9x/NT4/ME/2000/XP/2003 by giving you the ability to print lists of folders or files on your hard disk or network. Thoroughly comprehensive and brilliant.  This is a 15-day evaluation.  Price :  $29.  All versions of Windows.

This versatile utility enables you to clean your Windows Registry of obsolete entries, thus significantly reducing the boot time of your Windows 95/98/ME/NT4/2000/XP PC.  It also includes the ability to automate the deletion of temporary files from your hard disk, as instructed in our "Recommended Windows 95/98/ME regular Housekeeping tasks" document.  Finally, it also has an excellent Start Menu cleanup facility which can simplify the removal of those dreaded links to the A: drive which always result in your PC accessing your floppy drive when it starts, and whenever you use Explorer.  An excellent tool.  If you use it to clean your Registry, remember to first close all programs and tray icons before cleaning your registry, and also reboot your PC immediately after cleaning the registry – you will avoid problems this way.  Use carefully !  Free.

A great free little utility.  How many times have you pasted into a document text that you picked up from an e-mail or from the web, and then spent half an hour getting rid of the unwanted line breaks, or getting rid of the dozens of spaces at the beginning of each line?  With eCleaner this is now a thing of the past!  First configure it once and for all to "Leave blank lines".  Thereafter simply copy and paste any e-mail or web text into eCleaner, press the "Clean" button, immediately switch back to your wordprocessor or e-mail, and paste.  As simple as that.  Free.

This is the best image manipulation program we have seen for the general public (Free for home use).  The most striking feature of this program is its ease of use – whereas other programs have you wonder and even fear their various features, the simplicity of this program quickly turns any user into an inveterate mad image manipulator !  You can do everything from the right-click menu or from the menus that pop up when you take the mouse to the edges of the screen.  It is an odd concept but it works brilliantly. As for the features, they're all there :  image resizing, image conversion, noise reductions for those noisy photographs, brightness enhancement for those underexposed photographs, red-eye elimination, cropping, hue saturation, image sharpening, image blurring, special effects (sepia, waves, gray scale, drop shadow, lens, frame marks, bump map, negative), RGB Level, histograms, image conversion, EXIF data from digital pictures, ability to modify the EXIF data or add JPEG comments, rotate, invert, slide how, set as default image viewer.  Absolutely brilliant.  FREE for PRIVATE (non commercial) or educational use – commercial organizations must register. Another gem from FastStone.  Use this FREE screen capture to capture any part of your screen into a JPEG, GIF, TIFF, BMP, PCX, DCX, TGA, AVI or even an icon file (ICO).  You can capture any Windows or dialogue box, the full-screen, a selected area of your screen, or a scrolling window, and you can copy and paste into a wordprocessor to illustrate a document with screenshots, for example, or you can capture directly to the clipboard or to a file, or to an image editor.  Simple but extremely powerful.  Can be minimized to the System Tray.  Top stuff.  FREE for PRIVATE (non commercial) or educational use, commercial organizations must register.  Win98/ME/2000/XP/2003/Vista.

The world's most complete reference on File Extensions and their associated applications.  No longer will you be wondering what the .ppd, .png, or .cdm file you just received by e-mail is about.  Fire up Filex and it will instantly tell you what the file is and in which application it was created.  You need Internet Explorer 5 or higher installed on your PC for it to work.  Free.

Floppy Disk Manager 2.1    1.32Mb
An absolutely essential utility for anyone who sets up and configures PCs. Floppy Disk Manager enables you to take an image copy of a floppy disk and store it on your hard disk or network.  At a later stage, when you need that vital floppy disk (e.g. a System Disk, or a Drivers disk), simply recreate the floppy disk using the image that you stored on your hard disk or network.  Using Floppy Disk Manager, build yourself a library of those crucial floppy disks and so insure yourself against the loss, or corruption, of those floppy disks.  It has a weird installation procedure which does everything except create Program Icons (!!),  but in all other aspects this is a truly professional tool with the ability to enter comments against each diskette image.  We have been using it, and its predecessor, WinDupe, for years with total satisfaction.  This is a fully working 30-day demo;  $49 to purchase.

We have two great graphics file viewers on this page, the brilliant Image Navigator which enables you to view pictures and other graphics files as a collection of slides, and PrintStation which enables you to do the same but...  on a printer !  None of them, however, can work as Windows default graphics file viewer so that whenever you double-click on a file in explorer or in an e-mail, it will open up for you to view instead of giving you an error message to the effect that you do not have a relevant viewer.  FuturixImager fills this gap and more :  you can modify the images you view, you can capture the screen to file, and you can export images to Windows icons, amongst other things.  The world of default Windows viewers is a minefield of buggy or badly designed software.  FuturixImager bucks the trend with quality and power features in a simple interface.  Check the "Tools \ Options \ File Formats" menu option after you have installed it.  Windows 95/98/ME/NT4/2000/XP.  Free.

The ultimate Windows NT4/2000/2003 Server Administration Tool.  This tool is a must for all Windows NT4/2000/2003 Server installations as, crucially, it enables you to backup Users (and all their attributes), Groups, and shares, and then restore them on another server the day that your server crashes for good !  Ideal Administration completely obviates the need for a BDC (Backup Domain Controller).  A great tool.  We had strong reservations about the pre-sales support, however.  One-line answers are user unfriendly to say the least, and the makers of the package seem to specialise in them !  In our opinion, some of their answers were extremely curt and downright inflexible.  Hopefully you will have better luck – if not, you can always try us.  The product is very well written however, and you should rarely need support.  This is a limited demo which does not allow to import onto another server.  Prices start at $340.  Available in French and German also.

For Windows 9x/ME/NT4/2000/XP/2003/Vista.  An excellent and simple little utility which enables you to find out which folders and subfolders use the most space. The display is automatically sorted by size and you can drill down to find out the "culprit" subfolders that are gobbling up your hard disk space.  An excellent housekeeping tool for both home users and IT professionals as it also works on network drives.  Free.

A f.a.n.t.a.s.t.i.c piece of software !  A demonstration in how to write powerful software and yet make it soooooo easy to use.  Once you have discovered Image Navigator you will not use any other image or graphics viewer ever.  It's an absolute joy to use.  Thumbnails, double-click on an image for a full screen, image rotation, slide shows, drag and drop into other applications, rotate right, and left, flip upside down, or from left to right, brilliant right-click menus, and to support all this, a superb print quality.  A gem from the Ukraine, and it's free.  Stunning, brilliant, wonderful.

One purely for the techies. This free zip compression utility is an essential tool to have around for that fateful day when you or one of your users/customers is faced with a corrupted zip file, or has lost one or more disks from a [span] set of zipped files.

MACView 1.1 for NetWare    370K
An interesting little utility for Novell networks.  Enables you to quickly see who is logged in on a NetWare network thus eliminating the need to do an RCONSOLE onto the server.  Also displays the MAC addresses of the users' network cards (hence the name of the program), each network card's manufacturer, the last user login time, the NDS Tree, the network number, the connection ID, and the type of object.  You can very usefully sort the information in all imaginable orders, and, last but not least, you can save to disk or print the displayed information.  A tiny little gem.  Free.

Ze Best !!  Absolument !  This used to be called Media Jukebox.  The developers re-wrote the product entirely, called it Media Center, and, best of all, finally eliminated the nagging occasional stability problems of Media Jukebox in an otherwise brilliant product.  There cannot be a better companion to your CD-Writer than this.  The must-have for listening to MP3 or any other type of music files.  Rip (copy) music tracks directly from your CD-ROM drive to hard disk and create compilation CDs from MP3 files and/or from individual tracks from your CD collections.  Full CDDB compliance means that, if you are connected to the Internet, all you have to do is point it to any music CD or music file and it will display the title of the song, artist, and album.  Handles MP3, the increasingly popular Ogg Vorbis format, Windows Media, Play Lists, RealAudio, Liquid Audio, in fact all media types that exist "out there";  and now it even handles images (for your digital camera collections), in fact any type of multimedia files, or you can use it for straightforward data files handling.  A brilliant and intuitive interface – we tried 33 offerings and none matched Media Center.  It also does CD copying, it includes file conversion to allow you to convert files from one format to another, and it will create your CDs at any speed up to your CD-Writer's top writing speed.  This is a fully enabled 30-days evaluation – the full product costs $39.98.  This is software that makes you purr.

The free equivalent of NetScan Tools below.  Not as regularly updated as NetScan Tools, Alexander Danileiko's NetLab is nevertheless a great piece of software, and available at an incredible price !  Whois queries (not as sophisticated as NetScan Tool's Whois, but if you know what you are doing you can get close by adding your own list of Whois servers), IP tracing, Ping, you can synchronise the time on your PC or WinNT server with an Internet time source, at regular intervals throughout the day, you can obtain quotes from quote servers, do Finger queries, or perform DNS lookups.  Its best feature, however, and where it surpasses most other products, is its IP scanner which enables you to scan your network for LIVE or available IP addresses within an IP address range.  Great for poorly documented networks with static IP addresses, or when you want to find which IP addresses are still up and running.  Free.  For Windows 95/98/NT.  Excellent.

Ever had to change your network settings every time you sit down at a client's site, or fumble with your IP address configuration, network shares, printer captures, e-mail clients, and network protocols and clients every time you plug into your home network, your office network, or a client's network ?  If Yes then NetSwitcher is the tool for you.  Dead easy to use :  simply set up various configuration profiles, and then use the relevant profile for your current location.  You're at home, click on the Home Profile to activate it; you're at work, click on the Work profile to activate it; you're at a regular client, just activate that profile, and so on.  A breeze.  $14 to purchase when this full-featured demo expires.  Windows 95/98/ME/NT4/2000/XP.

The Ultimate email notification program.  If you have to keep tab on many POP email accounts, then this is the program for you.  Its list of features is staggering.  You can keep tabs on an infinite amount of POP mail accounts.  You can choose between a variety of alerts (sound, flashing System Tray icon, popup window).  You can configure the program to check at specific intervals on a global basis, or set individual intervals for each email account.  You can read your emails directly from within the program and respond to them, and still pick up the same emails from within your normal email program when you are back at home, say, or you can have PopTray always bring up your normal email program (Outlook Express, say).  You can configure Hotkeys and what Double-clicking on the System Tray PopTray should do.  You can have PopTray show in your own language (24 languages so far!).  You can set email rules, exactly as in most email programs.  And, finally, the icing on the cake :  you can password PopTray so that other users cannot start it or open it when it is flagging that messages are waiting for you.  Are you amazed ?  We are!  Runs on Win9x/ME/NT4/2000/XP/2003/Vista.  FREE.

For developers and systems people.  Ever wanted to change the date and time created or modified on a file or group of files, so that they all have the same uniform date and time ?  Or have you ever copied folders from a CD-ROM to your hard disk and then had to go through every single subfolder and files to take off the Read-Only attribute, and wished there was a program that enabled you to do it in one fell swoop ?  —  then this is what you want.  It's free and works like a dream.  For Windows 95/98/NT.

The best free Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP Registry Editor anywhere.  The Search facility alone is worth the download – unlike the standard Windows REGEDIT which only allows you to search in step mode fashion, with Registrar Lite you can search the entire Registry or selected trees in one go with all matches presented together, an immense time saviour when you want to delete, for example, all references to a particular piece of software.  You can also search for key names only, for value names only, for data values only, or any combination of the three.  You can set bookmarks, and have bookmarks coloured.  Registrar Lite also includes helpful descriptions about the most common registry keys, the facility to backup or restore your registry, property sheets for keys, the ability to expand a whole subtree in one go, and more, and more.  And this is just the free version – the full version adds powerful remote facilities for the administration of user registries in a network environment, as well as a few other extras.  An indispensable tool for anyone who edits the Windows Registry.

Free English US Spell Checker for Outlook Express.  Excellent spelling checker for users who have Outlook Express and want a spell check program but do not have any Microsoft Office programs installed (Outlook Express uses the MSOffice spell checker files to provide its spell check facilities).  This program is also useful for users who have seen their Outlook Express Spell Checker wiped out by the installation of Microsoft Office 2007 as the MSOffice 2007 spell check files are not compatible with Outlook Express – if you have experienced this then this program will restore your ability to spell check your emails.  English US spell check only.   Free.

Kolla of Germany (interesting how the best adware/spyware removal programs all come from Germany).  Many software packages come with embedded third party software which sends information about your Internet behaviour from your PC to specific companies!!  This is called spyware.  In other cases the embedded software pulls advertisements from a specific ad server whenever you are connected to the Internet and displays them to you.  This is called adware and has the highest annoyance level possible !  Software manufacturers use adware so they can let you use their software free of charge while they get their revenue from advertisers.  Unfortunately, even when you de-install the original "carrier" software, the spyware or adware often still remains on your PC, sending information out every time you connect to the Internet.  The potential for this type of software is enormous as it can easily be turned into something that sends information that is stored on your PC!!  The problem is such that antivirus manufacturers are starting to produce commercial products to address it.  And it gets worse, time and time again this type of software is found to be the cause of Internet browser crashes, PC freezes, illegal operations, etc...  Run Patrick Kolla's SpyBot Search & Destroy to see if your PC has such software running, and then rid yourself of it!  SpyBot Search & Destroy is FREE.

For Windows 9x/NT4/2000/XP/2003.  For web developers and website managers.  The best website statistics reporting program out there.  This program handles almost all types of webserver log files and produces elegant columnar and graphical statistics about your website.  You think of something you want to report on, it has it.  You can now easily find out how your website is performing, which pages are accessed the most, how many hits and page views you get, who visits you, when, and lots more...  As for the developers of the program, they are a joy to deal with – suggest any new feature which sounds useful and they will implement it.  You could pay $800, $3000, or more, and you will still not get anything better or easier to use than this $95 program.  A true gem.

Suggested by an AnswersThatWork user, this program is every bit as amazing as we were told it was.  For Advanced Users only.  THE Rename's prime use is to enable you to rename files en-masse;  however, you can also change the extensions of a group of files, change the case of filenames from upper to lowercase for publication to a website, you can sequence files, you can have the program add the date and time to the names of files (Ahh, those holiday pictures finally properly sorted!), you can get the program to automatically create sequenced folders for you, e.g. for testing purposes,.... and there is more.  If you decide to use THE Rename, make sure you first read the "Suggested uses for THE Rename" in the Help.  Then, whenever you use it, always preview the results – it will save you a lot of grief.  An extremely powerful and amazing tool.  FREE.  Works on Windows 9x/NT4/ME/2000/XP.

Some users like to start their programs with just the one click straight from the System Tray (next to the clock).  There are many programs out there which will enable you to do that.  Toggle TrayTools is the Rolls Royce of all of them.  Dead easy to use, brilliantly comprehensive, reliable, and with a very small footprint.  Works on Windows 95/98/NT4/ME/2000.  $15 if you decide to keep it.

A handy free little utility to copy directory trees.  Developers and System Administrators will relish the ability to copy a whole folder structure, including all subfolders, to a different location, without copying the files inside those folders.  Works a treat – we use it a lot.  It used to be able to copy the layout of your chosen directory tree to a text file, but that feature has been removed, so use Directory Printer for that.  For Win9x/NT4/ME/2000/XP.  Free.

For Windows 9x/ME/NT4/2000/XP/2003.  A brilliant little utility which enables you to find out which folders and subfolders use the most space.  You can sort your folders by size, you can drill down to find out the "culprit" subfolders that are gobbling up your hard disk space, and you can also check which folders waste hard disk clusters.  An excellent housekeeping tool.  Free for personal use (note the free version will not work on network drives – for this you need the Professional version, or, alternatively, use i.Disk above).
